Food Bloggers Against Hunger: Meatless Sloppy Joes #takeyourplace

Meatless Sloppy Joes

Today, I'm one of many food bloggers participating in a special awareness event -- Food Bloggers Against Hunger. This is a topic that is personally very important issue to me. Did you know that someone on government food assistance (SNAP) will typical receive only $3-$4 a day to purchase food for themselves? Could you imagine spending only $1 for each of your meals? I recently watched the new documentary, A Place at the Table, and it left me wondering if I could buy food to make a healthy … [Read more...]

Roasted Red Pepper Bean Dip

Roasted Red Pepper Bean Dip

At  Blogalicious 2012, we had the opportunity to learn about More Birthdays -- a movement started by the American Cancer Society to fight for more birthdays for everyone by staying well, getting well, finding cures, and fighting back against cancer. This is important to our family -- like it might be to yours too. For us, we lost my husband's brother in the summer of 2000. He left behind his wife and their three young sons, all under the age of 8. This is why More Birthdays is a movement … [Read more...]

Calico Beans

Last weekend, our family headed down to Starbucks to get a drink after a day of yard work. There was a handful of people that come in saying "brrrr", rubbing their hands together (as if to warm themselves up), and bundled up in jackets, coats, and sweaters. To many of you, this might sound typical. But, to me, it's one of those strange situations that come from living in a warmer climate. I cook with beans A LOT. My family loves them and they are cheap, plus so good for you. In the summertime, it's very common for us to have them as a side dish - either as baked beans or as barbecue beans. I don't make them homemade every time, sometimes we just buy a can and heat them up, but I would say that the majority of the time, I try various recipes and make them from scratch (sometimes even cooking dry beans). Another favorite in our home is root beer. Beans + root beer? When I first … [Read more...]
