Are you ready to see my dining room Christmas decorating? I’m so excited to share it! If you don’t recall my first post about my dining room, you can read it here: Christmas Decorating in the Dining Room, but I’ll give you a quick recap here too.
Our previous home didn’t have a formal dining area, so for Christmas 2010, we had no decorations for the dining area of our new home. Our dining area is right off the of the living room, so having it missing all the usual holiday decorations looked a bit odd. This year, I was invited by Kmart’s Holiday Shop to decorate my dining room for $100. I was thrilled to give this a try!
In the photo below, you can see some of the items I purchased. Kmart had all their items separated into themes and the theme I decided to go with was called Country Living Vintage Christmas. It had lots of red (my favorite color) , plaid ribbons, and a more “woodland” look. I don’t really have a “theme” to my holiday decorating, but much of the items in the Vintage Christmas section at Kmart was items that would blend well with my current Christmas decor.
This red shelf is a main part of my usual dining room decor, so I wanted to really decorate this nicely. One of the best purchases I made at Kmart was a garland with poinsettias, pinecones, and gold bows attached to it. Putting this up took all of 60 seconds and then the shelf was nearly finished being decorated. One strand of beaded garland worked perfectly for the edge of the shelf and the pre-tied bows were attached where the beads met the shelf.
I hung the wreath above the shelf and I could tell right away that it was going to be quite eye-catching to anyone who enters my home. On the shelf, I added a few others things. In this photo below, you’ll see a wood birdhouse. It’s part of my everyday home decor, but I thought it looked great nestled among the pine.
I really like the metal shade candle I bought at Kmart, so that was given a prominent spot on the shelf too.
A favorite item of mine in my house is my vintage owl salt & pepper shakers. Those are part of my home decor in another area, but I thought they would go along perfect with the other items in the Country Living Vintage Christmas collection. When you are decorating, sometimes it’s fun to look around your house for items that you can pull into your new look.
Do you ever find an ornament you love? I do all the time and I use them in my decorating off of the Christmas tree. I bought two birdhouse ornaments at Kmart and I place one near each end of the shelf. This photos shows the birdhouse trio on the right:
Here’s the other one that sits on the left of the shelf:
Another great buy I made was the centerpiece for my table. I wanted something simple — like pull-out-of-the-box simple. That’s just what this centerpiece was. I first covered the table with the tablecloth I bought at Kmart (it was only $6.49). I placed two placemats in the middle of the table to set the centerpiece on.
The look is simple, but decorated just enough. I know this table will be filled with lots of food, so I didn’t want anything too fussy.
We have a large window in our dining area that I wanted to make more festive too. In other areas of my home, I decorate with simple green garlands, but I have bought all of them without lights attached. For this window, I decided that I didn’t want to have to wrap the garland with lights, but I wanted one with them already attached. Luckily, Kmart had just the thing I was looking for. To add more color to the garland, I took a wide plaid ribbon (that coordinates with the rest of the decorations) and loosely wrapped it around the garland.
Here’s another way I used a Christmas tree ornament — I fell in love with this heart ornament and decided it would be a great focal point on the window. I also used the same pre-tied bows that I used on the shelf on the garland. One was attached near the middle (as you see below) and then I attached another one to each of the corners.
Needless to say, I am so happy with my dining room now. It’s looks just like I hoped it would look and it’s works with the other decorations perfectly. I’m really excited for our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners now!
