A little while ago, I posted about our family field trip to Earth Fare – The Healthy Supermarket. I LOVE Earth Fare – I could do a whole “I’m Lovin’ It” post on how much I love that store. While on that trip, I saw Doug’s Famous Southern Fried Tofu in the deli case. Tofu is a totally new thing for us.
I’ve always been scared of tofu.
But in my Earth Fare post I mentioned that I might try that tofu someday. And, well…I DID!
We bought it. We took it home. We heated it up.
David took the first bite. He didn’t die. So I took a bite.
It was SOOO good! I mean, seriously, to-die-for-good. Texture sorta like a chicken breast with a coating that was so yummy…very much like fried chicken, but not very greasy or heavy.
Last week, I bought a few more pieces. This time, a chunk for me, a chunk for David and one for each of the kids. They loved it too!
Now, I’m all about doing lots of things homemade and I would really like to make something like this at home. I will most definitely challenge myself in the future. The ingredients seem pretty simple: organic tofu, organic all purpose flour, vegan chicken flavored broth, salt, pepper, nutritional yeast, and canola oil. But, for a treat, it’s nice to just pick up some at Earth Fare – already cooked and ready to go.
So, with passing and surviving this hurdle of trying tofu, I have decided to do something else crazy: I’m gonna cook with tofu! I bought a package while grocery shopping yesterday and we are going to make a stir-fry with it. I’m up for the challenge and am hoping I don’t screw it up! I think I’ll do okay, but can use all the advice I can get so feel free to let me know if you have some tips to share!

(Note: These opinions are my own — honest and unbiased. I received no compensation, I just loved Doug’s Southern Fried Tofu enough to write about it today.)

I LOVE Earth Fare. I moved away from NC, but thank heavens they've followed me to TN! Tofu takes on just about any taste. I usually stir fry with it or add silken to smoothies to boost my protein. Instead of frying it, I often times bake it to crisp the outsides…. just make sure you press the majority of the water out first!

LOL! You make me laugh! So….did you cook it?! I cooked with tofu many, many years ago. Seems to take on the taste of whatever you coat it with. I remember frying/sauteeing it with something (might have been nutritional yeast) and it was yummy. May have to try cooking with it again. Sure wish we had an Earth Fare around here!

If you liked the deli version you're going to love homemade! Stir fry is a good way to start but not the yummiest. I just blogged about a good one called peanut salad last week. Use firm for dinners, silken for desserts.
