Road Trips, Hot Dogs, Onion Crunch, and Banana Peppers

When our family goes on a road trip and we stop for gas, we often let the kids grab something else to snack on or drink. It’s been our long standing tradition and to them, it’s always the biggest treat. If you ask Mattie what one of the things he loves most about road trips, he’ll say stopping at gas stations and mini marts. No joke.

Recently, we took another road trip and we stopped before leaving at a new-to-us mini mart/gas station. The reason why we chose this particular gas station was because I had learned it was the ONLY place in Vegas to get a product called Onion Crunch — crispy fried onions in a shaker dispenser. I figured, we could get our road trip snacks, get some gas, and I could pick up a bottle of Onion Crunch for some future recipes. (I snapped some photos and put together a little story about our stop, which you can see on Google+ here: Road Trip Snacks – Hot Dogs, Onion Crunch, and Banana Peppers!)

But, I quickly learned that while this gas station does have Onion Crunch, they don’t sell bottles of it. I was so disappointed. It was only offered as part of their hot dog condiment bar. The hubby and Mattie had decided to get a hot dog, but considering that I not super crazy about hot dogs, I was thinking I would pass.

But I couldn’t resist.

I looked at the shaker dispenser of Onion Crunch and it I really wanted to try it. Also, there was banana peppers on the condiment bar. I love banana peppers and when we lived in Virginia, we used to buy them by the gallon. But here in the West Coast, they don’t seem to be that big of a deal. But seeing them, and the Onion Crunch, convinced to me to get a hot dog this time around.

I’m glad I did and it was SO good. The cool thing about the Onion Crunch is that when I do decide to have hot dogs, I like onions on them, but don’t always want to fuss with cutting one. The Onion Crunch is easy to shake on, nice and crunchy, and they tasted yummy. David loved them so much that he said we had to see about buying our own bottle. But I told him that this was it….this gas station is the only place in Las Vegas to have them! But I can buy online, and many people have them available locally in their grocery store (lucky hot dogs!). I’m hoping I do get my hands on some before next Thanksgiving — I want to make a green bean casserole with them.

If you want to check them out for yourself, you can find them here: Loeb’s Onion Crunch. They are also on Facebook and on Twitter.

If you want to check out this location, which is the only one (so far) to have Onion Crunch in Las Vegas, you can find this gas station at 9010 W Flamingo, Las Vegas — located at the corner of W Flamingo and S El Capitan Way.

    Brandie,

Could you please give me the location of this Sinclair gas station, I live in Vegas and want to check it out. The closest cross streets would help.

    Thanks.
