This Banana Split Smores Dip Recipe is a delicious twist on the campfire treat! Made in a cast iron skillet, layers of graham cracker, bananas, chocolate, strawberries, and toasted marshmallows come together for the ultimate dessert dip!

In 1904, a pharmacist in Pennsylvania created one of the most iconic ice cream desserts: the Banana Split — a banana split lengthwise and topped with scoops of ice cream.

In 1927, one of the most iconic campfire treats was published in a Girl Scout guidebook: S’mores — a combination of graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows.

Both of these American desserts are amazing on their own, but today, we’re taking these treasured favorites and sharing a mashup of both of them! We present….

BANANA SPLIT SMORES DESSERT DIP!

Banana Split Smores Dip Ingredients

To make your Banana Split S’mores Dip recipe, you’ll need only 6 ingredients:

Graham Crackers
Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
Mini Marshmallows (could regular size marshmallows)
Sliced Strawberries
Sliced Banana or Banana Chips
Chopped Pecans

You will also need a 10”-12” cast iron skillet. If you don’t have a cast iron skillet, you could substitute for another oven-proof skillet, but we only recommend this if you’ll be making this recipe indoors in the oven. If you are making this dessert dip while camping or outdoors, we recommend that cast iron skillet.

If you don’t have a cast iron skillet, we recommend getting one in the future (this Lodge Cast Iron Skillet is a great one). They are fabulous to cook all sorts of recipes – fried eggs, steak, chicken, skillet dinners, and desserts like this one! Cast iron was my dad’s absolute favorite type of cookware and as a result, I became a big fan too.

How To Make Banana Split S’mores Dip

Making this s’mores dip recipe is so incredibly easy!

For the ingredients and instructions, see the printable recipe card at the end of this post!

You’ll first crush several graham cracker squares to create graham cracker crumbs. We usually do this in our food processor, but you can also place them into a zipper-style food storage bag and pound them with a rolling pins to crush them.

In the cast iron skillet, place a layer of the graham cracker crumbs. Follow the crumbs with a sprinkle of chocolate chips and a solid layer of mini marshmallows. Top the marshmallows with more chocolate chips, and your sliced fruit. Sprinkle chopped pecans and a touch more chocolate chips on top.

If you are cooking your Banana Split Smores Dip indoors, place the cast iron skillet in your oven and broil on high for 3-4 minutes or until the marshmallows begin to get nice and puffy and they start to brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool for about 5 minutes.

If cooking outdoors, place your skillet on a grate over indirect heat. Heat your dip just until the marshmallows are melted.

Dip into your delicious dessert dip with graham cracker squares! If your grocery store sells graham cracker sticks, they are also a great option. You can also dip with vanilla wafers, cookies, or pretzels.

Banana Split Smores Dip Options

This is a very customizable recipe! Here are some ways you can change this up:

–PINEAPPLE: Many Ice Cream Banana Splits include pineapple chunks or a pineapple sauce. Either of those would make a great addition to this smores dessert dip!

–CHERRIES: Maraschino cherries are a frequent topping for banana split ice cream sundaes. You can add maraschino cherries to this smores dip, if you would like. Be sure to remove the stems, and you may want to cut them in half or chop them to make them easier to scoop.

–CHOCOLATE BARS: You can use chocolate bars instead of chocolate chips. Be sure to break or chop them up. Mini candy bars, like Hershey Miniatures, are a great option here.

–MARSHMALLOWS: We recommend using mini marshmallows, but using regular sized marshmallows works too. If using larger marshmallows, we recommend cutting them in half or quarters first. You could also use marshmallow creme if that’s the only option you have available to you.

–NUTS: We used chopped pecans for our Banana Split S’mores recipe, but you can use any chopped nuts that you prefer or have on hand. Chopped peanuts are a great option.

–SKILLETS: You can use a smaller pan if needed. A 6-8″ cast iron skillet will work just fine if that’s all you have (may need fewer ingredients).

–MORE OR LESS: While we give you amounts of the ingredients needed in the recipe card at the end of this post, don’t feel that you have to stick with what we say. If you want more chocolate, go for it! Want fewer marshmallows and more fruit, that works! Make your smores dip your own creation!

Ingredients

10”-12” iron skillet
graham crackers
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, plus 1 tablespoon, divided
1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows
1/2 cup sliced strawberries
1 large banana (sliced) or 1/2 cup banana chips
1/4 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

COOKING INDOORS

1. Take about 4 graham cracker sheets and crush them into crumbs. Sprinkle the bottom of a lightly greased cast iron skillet with the crushed graham crackers.
2. Sprinkle 1/2 cup chocolate chips on top of the crushed graham crackers.
3. Sprinkle the marshmallows on top of the chocolate chips, covering the skillet entirely.
4. Place the sliced fruit on top of the marshmallows.  Sprinkle the pecans and 1 Tablespoon of chocolate chips on top.
5.  Place the skillet in the oven and broil on HIGH for 3-4 minutes or until the marshmallows begin to get puffy and brown.  Remove from oven.
6.  Allow to cool for about 5 minutes and scoop and enjoy with graham cracker rectangles.

COOKING OUTDOORS

1. Follow steps 1-4 above for cooking indoors.
2. Place the cast iron skillet on a grate over indirect heat of the fire (grill or campfire). Do not place your skillet directly over the flames.
3. Heat your smores dip just until the marshmallows have melted. Take caution to not heat too long or your chocolate will burn. Remove from the fire and allow to cool for 5 minutes. Scoop and enjoy with graham cracker rectangles.
