Mexican Rice (Spanish Rice) is a classic side dish that my family and I love having whenever we make Mexican food for dinner. This dish and refried beans are our go-to.
This recipe is also easy and quick that only needs 7 ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen. The items you need are White Rice, Canola Oil, Minced Garlic, Tomato Sauce, Salt, Pepper, and water. It only takes us a little bit over 30 minutes to make!

Ingredients Needed to make Mexican Rice:
- Canola Oil (2 Tablespoons)
- White Rice (1 1/2 Cups)
- Garlic Cloves (2 – Minced)
- Tomato Sauce (1/3 Cup)
- Water (3 Cups)
- Sea Salt (1/2 Teaspoon)
- Ground Black Pepper (1/4 Teaspoon)

How to make Mexican Rice:
1. Prepare the Rice
Raise the rice in a Fine Mesh Strainer until the water runs clear. This will make sure to take off any outer starch so the rice will be fluffy.
2. Saute ingredients
In a Medium Saucepan over a medium-high heat, combine the Canola Oil, Rice, and Garlic. Next you will, saute mixture for 1 to 2 minutes until Rice starts to lightly brown.
3. Combine the rest of the ingredients
Turn heat to medium-low and add tomato sauce, water, salt, and pepper.
4. Time to cook!
Stir the rice and let simmer for 25 minutes or until there is no liquid in the pan. Make sure the rice is fully cooked. It might need a little bit more time to be ready. Make sure to avoid overcooking it because that will result in a mushy consistency.
5. Enjoy your homemade side dish!
Serve your homemade rice dish with your favorite Mexican food. My family and I love adding shredded cheese and sour cream.

2 cloves garlic, minced finely
1/3 cup tomato sauce
3 cups water
1/2 tsp. sea salt
