How to Make Onion Dip
This homemade dip recipe starts with mixing up a very simple onion dip seasoning with all the dry ingredients.
The mixture can be made in advance or mixed up just before preparing your dip.
The sour cream is spooned into a bowl and the onion dip seasoning is stirred into the sour cream until well blended. We recommend stirring with either a fork or a whisk, to help distribute the dry spices evenly throughout the sour cream.
Once the seasoning and sour cream is completely blended together, we recommend refrigerating for at least 1 hour before serving. It’s even better if you can make this the day before you want to serve it. This really helps the flavors to meld together.
Don’t worry! If you don’t have time to wait, you can serve immediately — we’ve done this on several occasions. But if you can make it in advance, we recommend it.
Sour Cream Substitutions
Don’t like sour cream? I think even if you don’t like sour cream, you could still end up enjoying this dip because the seasonings really transform the taste of the sour cream.
If you want an Onion Dip, but don’t want to use sour cream, we have a few ideas for you!
- Crème Fraîche – Crème Fraîche is a great substitute for sour cream. It’s similar to sour cream in texture, very creamy, but less tangy. Use the same amount as you would sour cream.
- Plain Greek Yogurt – you can substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream. Use the same amount as you would sou cream.
- Cream Cheese & Mayo – since an 8 ounce brick of cream cheese is much thicker than sour cream, adding about 1 cup of mayonnaise to help make it softer and easier to dip.
