Remember last week when I talked about needing a good, new wooden spoon? Well, to my surprise, that's exactly what my husband gave me for Mother's Day. David gave it to me in a gift bag, but when he handed it to me, he seemed a bit embarrassed. I asked him what was wrong and he said that he hopes I "like it" and that he didn't buy me "one of the most expensive ones".
I kissed him and told him thank you...and told him how much I loved my new spoons. That I didn't need an expensive set - that

Thoughts On Real Cooking (aka what am I doing here?)
This is a recent shopping trip - just a few things we picked up. It looks pretty good, right? Well, the food I bought wasn't this good. The food I used to buy looked very different than this. So did my cooking.
In my circles of family and friends, most would say that they know I love to cook. Most would say that I have good recipes. Most would say that I am a good cook.
But, really, I'm considering most of this description to be untrue.
I don't feel as if I have REALLY cooked. I thought
My New Food Processor
A couple days before my birthday this year, my husband and kids said that they were going shopping. I figured it was for me, but I had no clue what they planned. I did know they were going to the mall, so for all I knew that would mean a trip to Bath and Body Works.
But on my birthday, I learned what the big surprise was - my husband and oldest son went in together to buy me a new food processor to replace my old one.
Do you want to see my old one? Here it is:
It's so sad and pathetic
Top Chef Birthday Wishes
This past week was busy, yet so good. I like busy. And it was my birthday and my family totally spoiled me. I have so much to share about my birthday that I really need to do a separate post, but I thought I would share a fun thing that happened.
Wellie (our 19yr old) wrote to lots of my favorite "famous" people on Twitter and asked them to say happy birthday to me (without me knowing). She wrote a variety of people - a few actors/actresses, a singer or two, and several chefs. Well, most of
How do you get children to try new foods?
How do you get your children to try new foods?
That was the question asked when I was chatting with some moms about food.
It seemed that a common answer - or one that most everyone agreed with - was that children must take at least one or two bites of the food that was prepared.
I quietly disagreed. It wasn't appropriate for me to share my thoughts on the matter at that time, so I didn't. But I've thought about this over the last few days, so here I am.

Alice in Wonderland, a birthday, and a trip to Texas
Howdy everyone!
We went to see Alice in Wonderland (3D) this weekend and I totally LOVED it. I adore movies with lots of beautiful artistry and this one had plenty. Plus, it doesn't hurt that it had Johnny Depp {...swoon...}. I had a couple tears at the end -- I just felt so touched by the whole thing (the timeless story, the acting, the eye candy....) and in awe of all the talent involved in the making of it. Thank you to our kids, Wellie & Lil D, for treating the family.

French Toast and Jamie Oliver
When Mattie woke up today, and as I was starting to work for the day, he came in and asked me, "how do you make French toast?". I briefly explained the steps to him and he made a grossed-out face when he found out that the bread was dipped in an egg mixture (he doesn't care for eggs).
He made a few other comments about French toast still being good, despite the egg part. And while he didn't ask me to make the French toast for him, I could tell that was the underlying request. I knew this, so
Strategic Dish Drying Club
Sadly, we don't have a dishwasher.
Everything must be handwashed, which I don't really mind, but I would love the option to use a dishwasher on some days.
At some point in the early years of our marriage, it dawned on me that people actually hand dry the dishes that they hand wash. I seriously didn't know this. I believe I saw it on a movie or TV show: a couple standing in the kitchen while she washed and he dried. Interesting concept. Here's me: I let them air dry in their dish
Discovering Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches
My poor, deprived Mattie. He just learned about peanut butter and banana sandwiches. He was watching something on TV and mentioned to me about someone making a "peanut butter and banana sandwich". I told him "yeah, they're good."
He was shocked. He couldn't believe it. He glared at me as if to say, "YOU KNEW ABOUT THIS?". It was almost the same look I got when he learned that there was peanut butter with actual little pieces of nuts in it (aka chunky peanut butter). See, I told you he was
